Advocating for Equitable, Restorative Approaches to School Discipline
GLSEN urged the U.S. Department of Education to support and promote restorative practices, trauma- and healing-informed practices, mental health supports, and positive behavior interventions as effective alternatives to exclusionary and punitive school discipline, which disproportionately impacts students who are LGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and people with disabilities. (See 86 Federal Register §108).
Additionally, GLSEN joined 50 local, regional, state and national education and civil rights groups in signing onto a separate comment addressing concerning trends in the use of school threat assessments.
