Advocating for data collection on anti-LGBTQ+ bullying in K-12 schools
GLSEN submitted a public comment urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to revise its school supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) by strengthening the existing measure of bullying and hate speech based on sexual orientation and adding measures related to bullying and hate speech based on gender identity or gender expression. GLSEN also asked that DOJ develop a measure to address bullying and hate speech based on intersex status. (See: 86 Federal Register §172.)
Update: DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) adopted our recommended revision to a measure of bullying based on sexual orientation. BJS also affirmed the importance of data collection that is inclusive of transgender and nonbinary young people while indicating that additional cognitive testing is needed before our proposed measures could be adopted.
